Gruber posted a link to this memo from David Mamet to writers of the now-defunct The Unit, but I think it applies to about 95% of the dramas on TV today:

BUT NOTE:THE AUDIENCE WILL NOT TUNE IN TO WATCH INFORMATION. YOU WOULDN’T, I WOULDN’T. NO ONE WOULD OR WILL. THE AUDIENCE WILL ONLY TUNE IN AND STAY TUNED TO WATCH DRAMA.

ANY TIME ANY CHARACTER IS SAYING TO ANOTHER “AS YOU KNOW”, THAT IS, TELLING ANOTHER CHARACTER WHAT YOU, THE WRITER, NEED THE AUDIENCE TO KNOW, THE SCENE IS A CROCK OF SHIT.

That last line is modern TV’s biggest problem. So many shows spend half their runtime with unneeded and uncomfortable exposition in order to explain to the lowest-common-denominator audience member every little thing that is going on.

Finally, I pulled up Mamet’s wiki entry, and loved this line in reference to his distinct, natural style of script writing:

‘When asked how he developed his style for writing dialogue, Mamet said, “In my family, in the days prior to television, we liked to wile away the evenings by making ourselves miserable, based solely on our ability to speak the language viciously. That’s probably where my ability was honed.”’
